About this tool

The Chinese zodiac runs a twelve-year animal cycle layered over a five-element rotation, which is why the full pattern only repeats every sixty years — a Fire Dragon and a Water Dragon are read as quite different. This calculator gives you the animal, the element from the year's stem, your position in the cycle, and the traditional compatibility notes. Note that the Chinese year begins at lunar new year in late January or February, so a January birthday may belong to the previous animal. This tool applies traditional numerology and astrology rules exactly as those systems define them.
